Hundreds Of People Calling To Adopt An Abandoned Dog

PEOPLE as far away as the United States have made offers to adopt a dog abandoned at a Scottish rail station.Like a heartbreaking, real-world Paddington Bear, the dog was found sitting outside Ayr station next to a suitcase filled with his belongings. The shar-pei crossbeed, named Kai, was discovered “distressed” and tied to the railings.

A pillow, toy, dog food and bowl were found in the suitcase abandoned with the dog.

Senior Scottish SPCA animal care assistant Alan Grant said: “It would certainly have been very distressing for him at the time he was abandoned.

“He has been tied up to a fence and watched his owners walk away and leave him, and that’s distressing for any dog, even if you just tie your dog up outside the shop and go into the shop, most dogs will panic so it must have been very, very distressing for him watching his owners walk away.”

However, hundreds of people have now called animal welfare charity Scottish SPCA offering a new home for the homeless pup.

Calls from people living as far away as US states California and Tennessee had been received, the charity confirmed.

Regardless of the fact Kai was left with his belongings, this was still a cruel incident and we are keen to identify the person responsible

Stewart Taylor, a spokesperson for the charity whose Glasgow branch is currently caring for the animal, said: “The dog is microchipped and we were able to find out his name is Kai.”We contacted the owner registered to the microchip, who stated they had sold Kai on Gumtree in 2013. Unfortunately they could not tell us the address of the person who bought him.

“This case highlights the potential consequences of selling an animal online as it often leads to the impulse-buying of pets that people know very little about.

“Regardless of the fact Kai was left with his belongings, this was still a cruel incident and we are keen to identify the person responsible.

“If anyone can help we would ask them to get in touch as soon as possible. Kai is around two to three years old and is a lovely dog with a nice nature.

“We will look after him until we can find him a permanent and loving home.”

Kai will be re homed once he undergoes surgery to his eyelids, which are currently curled in a way that the lashes brush his eyeballs.

“He needs surgery which is quite a common procedure. He won’t be able to leave till he has had that so he will be with us for the next three to four weeks,” a spokeswoman added.
