Uruguay’s top scorer Luis Suarez has announced his retirement from international football at the age of 37, with his final game set to be played on Friday.

The former Liverpool and Barcelona forward, who is Uruguay’s all-time top scorer with 69 goals in 142 appearances, will bring an end to his illustrious career. The 37-year-old made his international debut on 8 February 2007 in a 3–1 win over Colombia. He rose to prominence at the 2010 World Cup, starting almost every match for Uruguay.

Suarez is one of only 38 players to have played in four or more World Cups. He played in the 2010, 2014, 2018 and 2022 World Cups. Joining a list of notable players such as Miami team-mate Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Pele and Miroslav Klose. He has also played in five Copa Americas, winning the 2011 tournament.

After retiring from international football, Suarez will continue to play for Inter Miami in Major League Soccer (MLS), where he has scored 16 goals and provided five assists in 20 appearances.
